US to ‘respond’ to Syria attack; Russia kickbacks

The attack on Syria has raised tensions between the two nations- US and Russia. There has been an urgent call for action discussed at UN Security Council meeting.

After the confirmation of a “poisonous chlorine gas attack” in Douma on Saturday that took toll of dozens of people, including children and women, an emergency session was appealed by the US, Britain, France and other six nations. The Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad and its ally Russia have called the allegations “fabrications”.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, told in the urgent meeting that Washington was ready to “respond” to the attack irrespective of Security Council taking any action or not. “We have reached the moment when the world must see justice done,” Haley said.

“History will record this as the moment when the Security Council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of Syria,” she added. “Either way, the United States will respond.” She also branded Assad as “monster” and accused Russia behind the attacks as well. However, Moscow reported that the experts have not found “any trace of chlorine or any other chemical substance used against civilians”.

Mr. Nebenzia, standing for Russia’s case that rebels in Douma, says that its an allegation laid by US to hurt Russia. “Armed force under mendacious pretext against Syria, where, at the request of the legitimate government of a country, Russian troops have been deployed, could lead to grave repercussions,” he said.
